Achieving Salt Restriction in Chronic Kidney Disease
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is consistent evidence linking excessive dietary sodium intake to risk factors for cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in CKD patients; however, additional research is needed. In research trials and clinical practice, implementing and monitoring sodium intake present significant challenges. Epidemiological studies have shown that sodium intake remains high, and intervention studies have reported varied success with participant adherence to a sodium-restricted diet. Examining barriers to sodium restriction, as well as factors that predict adherence to a low sodium diet, can aid researchers and clinicians in implementing a sodium-restricted diet. In this paper, we critically review methods for measuring sodium intake with a specific focus on CKD patients, appraise dietary adherence, and factors that have optimized sodium restriction in key research trials and discuss barriers to sodium restriction and factors that must be considered when recommending a sodium-restricted diet.

Salt restriction in chronic kidney disease: a simple need or a must?
Dietary salt restriction is one of the most important non pharmacological intervention in the management of hypertension and cardiovascular complications. In Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients, observational and recent interventional studies investigating the relationship between sodium intake and renal outcomes suggest that low salt diet is warranted in this high risk category of patients. ...
متن کاملPrediction of chronic kidney disease in Isfahan with extracting association rules using data mining techniques
Background: Millions of deaths occur around the world each year due to lack of access to appropriate treatment for chronic kidney disease patients. Given the importance and mortality rate of this disease, early and low-cost prediction is very important. The researchers intend to identify chronic kidney disease through the optimal combination of techniques used in different stages of data mining...
متن کاملIncreased Renal Iron Accumulation in Hypertensive Nephropathy of Salt-Loaded Hypertensive Rats
Although iron is reported to be associated with the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease, it is unknown whether iron participates in the pathophysiology of nephrosclerosis. Here, we investigate whether iron is involved in the development of hypertensive nephropathy and the effects of iron restriction on nephrosclerosis in salt- loaded stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). SHRS...
متن کاملA practical approach of salt and protein restriction for CKD patients in Japan
Dietary management, in particular salt and protein restriction is fundamental for the proper care of CKD patients. Therefore, a practical guide to the dietary treatment may be helpful among progressive CKD patients. In Japan, two academic societies such as Japanese Society of Nephrology and Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy have recently published Guidelines for Dietary Management for non-d...
متن کاملEffects of dietary salt restriction on renal progression and interstitial fibrosis in adriamycin nephrosis.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Although high salt intake is thought to accelerate renal progression in proteinuric kidney disease, it is not known whether strict dietary salt restriction could delay renal inflammation and interstitial fibrosis. Here, we sought to answer this question in a rat model of adriamycin-induced nephrotic syndrome. METHODS Adriamycin was administered via the femoral vein in a single...
